June 2010 – Cinema Report

By admin | 29/06/2010

Hi Culture Linkers,

How do you feel about our Culture Link this month with a bunch of interesting and amazing things? I saw some new guys and gals. Was your first Culture Link impressive?

You had a great lesson with the new Culture Link teacher, Mr. Stephen, who comes from England. The room was quite small for all of you but it could not restrict your enthusiasm. With eagerness to gain knowledge of new cultural aspects, you joined in the lesson and learnt more about many kinds of films and their development history. The way you took your turn and answered questions with the ball is unique. I truly want to catch it next time. Congratulations to the 4 winners of dictionaries: Pham Ninh Giang, Le Minh Nguyet, Le Thu Tra, Ngo Minh Thu and others who won Language Link T-shirts.

And now, my favorite part: Movie at Megastar!!! Love it. Your taste in movies is great. Half of you enjoyed yourselves with The Karate Kid –a mixture of martial arts and comedy. You met your idols: Jackie Chan, Jaden Smith Some of you chose Marmaduke. Luckily, you found the way out after getting lost in the world of pets. Couldn’t stop laughing. LOL. Mr. Stephen, some students and me voted for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. An amazing adventure with glorious panoramas.

I would like to give a special thanks to our new teacher, Mr. Stephen Tucker, who brought English culture to us, and will surely bring some surprise to us next month. Come and join us with the July Culture Link: History and styles of Pop Music. I promise it will be funny and filled with astonishment.

So buy your tickets early, tell your friends and ready to fire-up yourselves!

See ya!

May 2010 – Western Food Report

By admin |

Hi Culture Linkers,

Well, you rocked the place again!

Recipe: take one part western food, add a bunch of Culture Linkers, stir in a couple of quirky and crazy activities, sprinkle lightly with Choco pies and M&M’s, warm in the glow of the Boss and you have a great lesson!

So we learnt about haggis and borscht, Dover sole and Shepherd’s pie, cauliflower cheese and apple crumble, goulash and feijoada and how to make Yorkshire pudding. And we discovered that Western Food is more than hamburgers and pizza and French fries. We travelled the world from the comfort of our class-room and tasted what the Western world has to offer. Oh and we munched on choco-pies and fruit jellies and competed for Language Link t-shirts.

Then it was off to Casa Mia, a gem of a cafe with great staff and an awesome manager, Tien. The food was excellent, thanks to the very talented chef, the service impeccable and we had the entire second floor to ourselves. From the singing and laughter, empty plates and many photos I know you all had a great time.

And finally we headed for Lang Pagoda and the finale to a great day.  In groups of four you searched the area looking for the answers to the very tricky questions posed by Mr. Sunglasses and Miss Incredible. Though you all tried hard there could be only one winner; Team Butterfly with a score of 12 out of a possible 16. Congratulations to Tran Thi Hong Van, Tran Le Phuy, Nguyen Thuy Trang and Pham Quiynh Trang who won the dictionaries.

Now, to the sad part. This was my last Culture Link. I have had a great time, met some incredible people and have a mind full of great memories. Thank you all for being a part of the journey as Culture Link grew and for having a load of fun along the way. Special thanks to Yvonne and Elaine, Thuy Anh (Miss Incredible) and my Monthly English Group. It’s been a cool ride guys and what a way to say goodbye!!

Goodbye from the Boss (Mr.Sunglasses)

P.S. I may drop in and surprise you on some future Culture Link Sunday.
