August 2010 – Museum of Ethnology Report
Hi Culture Linkers,
Well last month was my first month organizing the Culture Link event and I must say that I had a lot of fun!
First off, we had an informative class about cultures and tribes from around the world. Stephen and I taught you about the traditional clothing and costumes that are worn by tribal people, and I’m sure you’ll never forget the word of the day – ‘LOINCLOTH’. We learnt about tribes from Canada, Australia, Borneo and South Africa and I hope you didn’t tell your mothers about some of the pictures that we brought to the class!
After lunch, we met at the Museum of Ethnology on Nguyen Van Huyen to learn more about the people of Vietnam. It was a very hot day and Stephen and I were happy to wait by the air conditioner while you hunted for the information to fill in the questionnaire. Some of the questions were a little bit tricky but everyone did very well, gathering the information and
answering all the questions. It was a very close first round, but Pham Duc Minh and Bui Anh Quang won the t-shirts as they finished the questionnaire first.
Before we started the next questionnaire we gathered outside and broke up into two teams. Each team had to walk across the bamboo bar without falling off and unfortunately for my team, Stephen’s team all managed to walk across the bar first. So they won some snacks. Congratulations! Then Stephen walked across the bar, but he cheated as he was tall enough to
reach the tree and hold onto it while he was walking! After he finished, I had a go, and it took me a while but I made it! It was hard work! Well done to everyone who made it over the bar without falling off.
Round 2 of the questionnaire was upstairs and, you would not believe it, but the same dynamic duo Pham Duc Minh and Bui Anh Quang won again! This time their prize was a couple of dictionaries. Congratulations again guys!
We were all quite tired after all that hard work, so we sat down to watch the water puppet show and eat some ice-cream and relax. What a great end to the day.
This month, I hope you have even more energy because we’re going to be jumping around a lot more. The theme for this month is dancing! I really can’t wait and I hope that I see all the same faces again, and even more! It’s gonna be a blast!!

July 2010 – History and Styles of POP Music Report
Hi Culture Linkers,
We’re glad to see more and more new faces this month. Along with Stephen – our great singer, we travelled in a time-machine to witness the overview of a whole history of music, from the 50s to nowadays. We also flew on an airplane around the world to see many kinds of instruments and hear all kinds of music. You guys showed your wonderful music understanding and your excellent listening skills through all the games. Congratulations to the winners of dictionaries: Dang Ngoc Chien, Nguyen Manh Cuong, Nguyen Bich Huyen, Le Quang Hieu and Nguyen Thu Thao.
Of course the rainy day could not stop your love for music. The evidence was your presence at the R&R Bar, 10 Tho Nhuom Street. We enjoyed our dinner before listening to beautiful music performed by many musicians there. We were lead into the very different world, covered only by music. Please say thanks to the band, Japanese musicians, some American ones, and many others that I can’t remember the names of (Sorry for that ^^). Don’t forget to give a big round of applause to the 3 little girls who sang “Trong Com” and “The Show”: Hanh, Phuong and Chi. Their singing was at the end of the evening but still got our attention. Make sure you remember R&R Bar has an Open Mic Session every Sunday night. You can come to enjoy the music or give others the chance to hear your voice or your playing. Take the stage!
Topic for next month is “Museum of Ethnology”. Sound familiar? Yes. Will it be the same style as the last time we went there? Definitely not. Because we have a very new teacher team this month: Nicki and Stephen. They will work splendidly together to bring us some new and attractive viewpoints on that topic.
Do you want to relax and enjoy the fresh air and learn something new about different cultures? Join us!
