Can I skip a level? I want to try a more difficult class. I promise to work hard to keep up.

There’s a big difference between knowing grammar and being able to use it. Paper knowledge is not enough. Learning a language is like learning a musical instrument; you need plenty of practice and this takes time. The teacher who assessed you feels that you need more practice at a lower level. Also, please remember that 80% of the grammar we use in spoken English is in the Elementary book. It’s much better to get the basics right than study more difficult English before you’re ready for it.

Another problem is pronunciation. Vietnamese people have many pronunciation problems and these can only be fixed through practice.

So please be patient. At Language Link we really care about our students. We pay a lot of care and attention to finding the right level for you to study at.

I don’t have time to improve my English. I just want to join the IELTS course.

IELTS is a very difficult exam. In order to study at an English-speaking college you need a minimum score of 6.0 or above. In order to achieve this you should be at the Upper Intermediate level.

At Language Link we have English for Academic Success courses which are specially designed to help students both improve their general English and prepare for exams and to study abroad. We strongly recommend you take this course.

I have just done a placement test but the level is lower than expected. Can I redo it?

Our placement test is designed to fix a student’s true level, so you don’t need to take it again. At Language Link we judge your English on your ability to use it. We focus on the 4 skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. You have a good paper knowledge of English grammar, but this doesn’t mean you can use English in practical situations.

Also, Vietnamese have big problems with pronunciation which can only be solved with practice. This may mean that it’s much better for you to study at a lower level.

Finally, it’s very important to have a good working knowledge of basic English before studying more difficult English.

I was enrolled in a lower level than my friends. I would like to join them and I will try my best.

Though we understand that you’d like to study with your friends, our placement test, which is specially designed to find a students’ true level, shows that you are at a different level. It’s much better for you to study at the correct level. Learning a language takes time and needs a lot of practice. At Language Link we focus on the practical skills of English; speaking, listening, reading and writing, so you can’t just learn it by studying alone from a book, no matter how hard you work.

Also, we have to think of the other students in a class. It isn’t fair to them or the teacher if one student is weaker than the rest.

So please be confident. You can study very well by yourself. You don’t need to be with your friend. Also, you’ll soon make friends with the other students in your class, so it’s a good chance to make new friends.
